Lesson 1: Storytelling Creates Belonging
By
Alex Rășcanu

Right now I'm in a co-working space, reflecting on the past year and on how I can add more value to you in 2025.

A thought came to mind. What if I transformed my weekly e-newsletter into one that shares 1 key insight, which you can use to take meaningful action right now?

Let's give this a try.

Over the past 2.5 years, I’ve run the #ExperienceTO historical tours across Toronto. We've explored local neighborhoods, hidden gems, and shared the stories that make this city unique.

Here’s what I learned: Stories connect people.

When people hear about Toronto’s past—its pioneers, cultural landmarks, and evolving communities—they see themselves in it. History suddenly feels personal and alive.

The best part? Strangers become friends. They bond over shared moments of discovery and curiosity.

Toronto is diverse. Stories help us feel connected to the city and to each other.

Next time you explore a neighborhood, ask: What’s its story? You might just discover a new new insight, a new friend, and/or a renewed passion for the city.

Now I encourage you to do 2 things:

  1. RSVP to attend at least two of the ten #ExperienceTO historical tours that will bring us together in 2025. You'll learn, make a new friend, and gain a greater appreciation for Toronto. Did I mention that the events are free?
  2. Find the history of your Toronto address and neighbourhood by using these resources from the City of Toronto.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

All the best,
Alex Rășcanu

P.S. Stay tuned for the next lesson, which will help you uncover new opportunities.

The Rășcanu Weekly Report Lesson 16: Build a Community Through Bold ActionBy Alex Rășcanu Good morning, While preparing to facilitate the #ExperienceTO: Dufferin Grove Historical Tour on Saturday, I realized that we can learn from the story of the Denison family. In 1792, John Denison, a British army officer, arrived in Upper Canada (today's Ontario), determined to build a new life. He secured land, developed infrastructure, and played a key role in shaping Toronto’s early communities. The...

The Rășcanu Weekly Report Lesson 15: Intentional Choices Create Lasting ImpactBy Alex Rășcanu Good morning, While facilitating the latest #ExperienceTO historical tour on Saturday, I realized that there's a lesson do be drawn from Robert Home Smith who is best remembered today for his development of the Toronto neighbourhoods Baby Point and The Kingsway, as well as the Old Mill Restaurant. Robert Home Smith’s approach to planning Baby Point was rooted in foresight and care. He didn’t just...

The Rășcanu Weekly Report Lesson 14: Intellectual Property and Innovation Strategies MatterBy Alex Rășcanu Good morning, In this week's reflection, I’d like to share a lesson from a prominent Canadian business leader and innovator: Jim Balsillie, former co-CEO of BlackBerry. He is the founder of the Balsillie School of International Affairs at the University of Waterloo and the Centre for International Governance and Innovation (CIGI) think tank, and serves as chair of the Canadian Council of...
