Lesson 10: The Power of Networking
By
Alex Rășcanu

Good morning,

Earlier this week, I took a call from a senior human resources professional who was seeking career advice.

I aimed to listen and share insights that were applicable to his specific scenario. The main point that I was making had to do with the importance of networking in a manner that intentionally serves others in the field of work you're most passionate about.

Building and maintaining strong connections can open doors to opportunities that are not publicly advertised, provide valuable industry insights, and position you as a leader in your field.

"Networking is a lot like nutrition and fitness: we know what to do, the hard part is making it a top priority." (Herminia Ibarra, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at London Business School)

3 Actionable Ways to Leverage Networking for Career Success:

  1. Engage in Meaningful Conversations
    • Reach out to professionals in your industry for coffee chats, phone calls, or virtual meetings.
    • Ask insightful questions and offer value in return, whether through industry knowledge or connections.
  2. Attend Industry Events and Meetups
    • Join local networking events, conferences, and professional association gatherings in Toronto.
    • Follow up with new contacts to build lasting relationships.
  3. Be Active on LinkedIn
    • Fully fill out your LinkedIn profile to highlight your achievements and skills, which can enhance others' trust in your expertise.
    • Use LinkedIn to connect with peers in your industry, and regularly share industry insights, comment on posts, and post updates that position you as knowledgeable in your field of work.

By embracing the power of networking, you can unlock new career opportunities.

How have you used networking to advance your career? Reply to this email to let me know.

All the best!

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 67: Legacy is the ground we pave for the future Hi friend, In preparation for the #ExperienceTO: Cabbagetown Historical Tour that will take place on Saturday, April 18, I was recently researching the life of Lieutenant Francis Gwillim Simcoe, the first private owner of land in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood. Francis Simcoe’s story is a fascinating look at the very early days of York (now Toronto). Born in 1791 at Wolford Lodge in Devon, England, Francis was...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 66: What we choose to preserve vs. replace defines the character of our community. Hi friend, If you stand at the corner of Toronto's Gerrard St. E. & Broadview Ave. today, you see a modern glass facility overlooking the Don Valley. But this specific plot of land has been through many iterations since the mid-19th century, each one reflecting a different, and sometimes conflicting, priority for our city. The history of this site offers a sobering life lesson:...
