Lesson 2: Be Prepared For New Opportunities
By
Alex Rășcanu

Merry Christmas, my friend.

This week’s lesson is inspired by something legendary basketball coach John Wooden used to say:

“When opportunity comes, it’s too late to prepare.”

We don’t know when the next big opportunity will present itself. It might be weeks, months, or years away. But one thing is certain: when it arrives, being ready makes all the difference.

Think about this: Kawhi Leonard, the basketball superstar, led the Toronto Raptors to their first NBA championship in 2019. In those pivotal playoff games, Kawhi wasn’t nervous about making game-winning shots. Why? Because he had prepared for those moments throughout his career. Every practice, every drill, and every game was an opportunity to refine his skills, build his focus, and develop the poise needed to perform under pressure.

Kawhi wasn’t just playing basketball—he was preparing for the moments that mattered most.

Here’s the takeaway: You don’t wait for opportunities; you prepare for them.

How can you prepare for unseen opportunities?

  1. Invest in growth every day. Learn something new, sharpen your skills, and expand your perspective.
  2. Focus on your strengths. Double down on the areas in which you’re most highly skilled.
  3. Practice the fundamentals. Like Kawhi’s relentless focus on perfecting his jump shot and defensive skills, ensure the basics of your craft are so ingrained that they come naturally when the stakes are high.

The question isn’t whether opportunities will come—they will. The question is whether you’ll be ready to seize them.

So, what can you do today to prepare for tomorrow’s success?

Looking forward to hearing how you’re getting ready for your next big moment!

All the best,
Alex Rășcanu

P.S. Stay tuned for next week’s lesson—it’s about how to develop meaningful goals for 2025.

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 24: Be PersistentBy Alex Rășcanu Hello, We live in tumultuous times — whether we’re discussing national security, economic development, employment, housing, or the stability of our political environment. It was good to see on May 27 His Majesty King Charles III attend the State Opening of the Parliament of Canada and deliver the Speech from the Throne to open the first session of the 45th Parliament and outline the government’s agenda. As Canada's current...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 23: How to get better at time management By Alex Rășcanu Hello, Getting better at managing our time can make a big difference in our daily lives. If you or someone you love regularly says: "I never have enough hours in the day" or "I feel like I’m constantly behind"... the person may be juggling too many responsibilities - work, family, personal goals - without a clear system to manage them. This creates mental clutter and emotional exhaustion. "Deadlines...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 22: Your Legacy By Alex Rășcanu Hello, This week I've been reflecting on the topic of legacy more than usual. Given that my current work involves serving seriously ill children and their families, end of life and legacy-related conversations happen more often than in more common environments. One other reason for reflecting on the topic of legacy is the fact that I'm preparing to facilitate an #ExperienceTO historical tour of High Park in a few weeks, and I...
