Lesson 3: Set Meaningful Goals
By
Alex Rășcanu

As we start a new year, it’s wise to take some time to reflect and dream about what’s ahead. Setting meaningful goals is about more than checking off boxes—it’s about aligning your actions with what truly matters.

Here’s the lesson: To build a fulfilling year, focus on the key areas that shape your life and prioritize what brings you closer to your purpose.

To guide you, here’s a quick framework for creating meaningful goals for 2025:

Purpose

Ask yourself: How can I live with greater purpose?
Examples: Watch leadership speaker John Maxwell’s talk briefly about finding your purpose, read "The Purpose Driven Life" book by Rick Warren, and/or explore resources like EntreLeadership on how to lead with purpose.

Family

Ask yourself: How can I show up better for my loved ones?
Examples: Plan regular family adventures like visiting a museum or exploring a ravine, start a family gratitude journal, and/or prioritize quality time with each family member.

Work

Ask yourself: What’s one step I can take to grow in my career?
Examples: Develop a new skill, mentor someone, and/or set a milestone like earning a promotion or launching a project.

Health

Ask yourself: How can I care for my body and mind this year?
Examples: Create a consistent workout plan, improve your diet, and/or schedule routine mental health check-ins.

Finances

Ask yourself: What financial habits will bring me closer to freedom and security?
Examples: Set a goal of paying off all personal debt, create a monthly budget, and/or invest the time in understanding Ramsey's 7 Baby Steps.

Relationships

Ask yourself: How can I strengthen my connections with others?
Examples: Call a friend weekly, plan a getaway with a loved one, and/or practice active listening in your conversations.

Community Service

Ask yourself: How can I contribute to making my community a better place?
Examples: Volunteer for a local cause, mentor someone in need, and/or organize a neighborhood event whose focus is on serving the needs of others.

Your Action Steps for This Week

  1. Reflect on each of these seven areas and write down 1-2 goals for 2025 in each category.
  2. Choose one small step for each goal that you can start immediately.
  3. Share your goals with someone who will encourage and support you throughout the year.

The key to meaningful goals isn’t how big they are—it’s how much they align with your values and the life you want to live. Take the time now to set your direction, and you’ll thank yourself in the months to come.

Here’s to a purpose-filled 2025!

All the best,
Alex Rășcanu

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 75: Make Room at the Table - The Beautiful ROI of Welcoming an Unlikely Audience Dear friend, The Liberty Village Historical Tour on Saturday, June 13th will start at the building that has an important story to tell. My research suggests that Irwin Toy Limited was the cornerstone of Canada's toy industry for decades. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the Toronto-based company was the country's largest and most dominant toy distributor, bringing iconic brands like...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 74: Be a good steward Dear friend, This morning is busy at my local Tim Hortons. Most people are arriving and leaving in a rush, despite it being 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday. Rather than engaging in that kind of rush, you're taking some time to read and reflect on this week's e-newsletter... and I appreciate you choosing to spend these few quiet moments here. I just finished reading Victor L. Russell's book, Mayors of Toronto (Volume 1: 1834-1899). One former mayor...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 73: Turn your setbacks into community impact Dear friend, While sitting at Brockton Village Bakery this morning, sipping on a coffee, reflecting on the past week, and reading Victor L. Russell's Mayors of Toronto (Volume 1: 1834–1899), I began thinking about the story of Thomas David Morrison. Can his life story teach us anything applicable to our daily lives, including how we approach the municipal elections taking place across Ontario on October 26, 2026?...
