Lesson 72: The Choice Between Security and Adventure

Hi friend,

In the recent interview with Clyde Wagner from TO Live, we explored how curiosity can lead to unexpected career pivots. Today, let's take that a step further. Once you’ve pivoted, or even while you are considering it, there is a fundamental choice we all face: Do we prioritize security, or do we embrace adventure?

I recently sat down with Doru Gordan, the owner of Complete Flooring Inc. While his business is in the construction industry, his philosophy is one that resonates regardless of your profession.

Doru’s path wasn't linear. He was born in Romania and graduated with a degree in political science. When he moved to Canada in 2006, he didn't look for a job in his field of study. Instead, he looked for a trade he could master.

He realized that personal agency starts with having a skill that provides value directly to others. But as he grew his business, he began training his employees and some of them become his competition.

In many corporate environments, we are taught to guard our "secrets" and protect our positions. Doru, on the other hand, views training and mentorship of staff as a duty. By training young people, he isn't just installing floors; he’s building a more competitive and more affordable community for everyone.

During our conversation, Doru shared a perspective that stuck with me:

"The biggest challenge for anyone... is to overcome the fear of starting. You are weighing two principles: security versus adventure."

This isn't just about starting a company; it’s about:

  • The courage to learn a new skill when your old one feels stagnant.
  • The willingness to mentor others, even if they might one day surpass you.
  • The discipline to "mind your own business and charge on" when the world feels overly regulated or restrictive.

Whether you work in an office, a studio, or on a job site, Doru’s journey reminds us that security is often an illusion, but adventure is where we actually grow.

In this interview, we dive into:

  • The Power of Self-Reliance: Why learning a "sellable trade" provides more freedom than a traditional job.
  • The Mentorship Model: How empowering others to succeed actually strengthens your own legacy.
  • Economic Choice: Why a freer market leads to better lives for the "little guy."
  • A "Charge On" Philosophy: How to navigate a changing world without losing your personal focus.

You can watch the full interview with Doru on YouTube here.

Legacy isn't just about what we leave behind; it’s about who we empower while we’re here.

Are there any other take-aways that stood out to you?

Thank you for taking the time to read, watch the interview, and reflect.

Until next time,
Alex Rășcanu

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 75: Make Room at the Table - The Beautiful ROI of Welcoming an Unlikely Audience Dear friend, The Liberty Village Historical Tour on Saturday, June 13th will start at the building that has an important story to tell. My research suggests that Irwin Toy Limited was the cornerstone of Canada's toy industry for decades. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the Toronto-based company was the country's largest and most dominant toy distributor, bringing iconic brands like...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 74: Be a good steward Dear friend, This morning is busy at my local Tim Hortons. Most people are arriving and leaving in a rush, despite it being 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday. Rather than engaging in that kind of rush, you're taking some time to read and reflect on this week's e-newsletter... and I appreciate you choosing to spend these few quiet moments here. I just finished reading Victor L. Russell's book, Mayors of Toronto (Volume 1: 1834-1899). One former mayor...

The Rășcanu Weekly Update Lesson 73: Turn your setbacks into community impact Dear friend, While sitting at Brockton Village Bakery this morning, sipping on a coffee, reflecting on the past week, and reading Victor L. Russell's Mayors of Toronto (Volume 1: 1834–1899), I began thinking about the story of Thomas David Morrison. Can his life story teach us anything applicable to our daily lives, including how we approach the municipal elections taking place across Ontario on October 26, 2026?...
